Intense family drama!
Katerina’s father announcing he is bidding to be president brings FBI agent, and blast from her past, Jara back into her life. She was her first love and with the loss of her grandmother and something suspicious happening with her Foundation, Jara is just back in time to be of help and for them to rekindle their feelings for one another.
From the start I knew this was going to get interesting. There was so much history between Katerina and Jara but it really did feel as if no time had passed for them at all. They fitted with one another perfectly and Jara was a great support to Katerina through the trauma and upheaval that she was going through. As with anything that has a political element, it just wouldn’t be without scandal and secrets that need to be investigated and uncovered. Some of the revelations for Katerina’s family were absolutely shocking, and I’d not been able to work any of it out, so it was all a surprise when they started realising what was going on. The secrets and lies fuelled her family and seemed to have been doing that for years, so there was so much to unpack.
Jara and Katerina made a great team. Intuition told them both a lot of what they needed to know, and some of the things they uncovered, especially for Katerina were heartbreaking and played with her already fragile emotions. Jara remained strong for them both, never wavering and staying loyal and true to herself, her job, and the woman she loved. It would have been easy for her to compromise her professionality, especially with Katerina’s dad putting her in difficult positions, but I admired how she didn’t and wouldn’t give in to any of that.
I was hooked from the very start and just hoping they would find happiness and all the secrets, lies, and danger wouldn’t get in their way.

I just tore through Hornet’s Nest by Lee Sato, and damn, this debut completely nailed it. Imagine an FBI agent––Jara Quinn––haunted by grief, meeting up with her ex‑lover Katerina Lansing, whose powerful family is suddenly wrapped in scandal and deadly secrets. Political intrigue, a foundation bleeding money, and grandma’s suspicious death? Talk about next-level drama.
But here’s what really sold me: it’s not just the twists (though there are plenty) or the suspense (page‑turner alert)—it’s how human the characters feel. Jara is all grit and heart, Katerina is fiery yet vulnerable, and their chemistry hits right in the chest.
Lee Sato’s background—years investigating crimes against kids, gangs, and trafficking—bleeds into the storytelling in the best way. There’s real-world weight here, not just fanciful plotting.

an outstanding read. The writing is smooth and engaging, almost like having a pleasant conversation with a friend. The characters are wonderfully developed, and the plot is intricate, filled with constant twists and turns that keep you hooked. It’s an intense and thoroughly satisfying story.
This is part of a series featuring FBI agent Jara Quinn. While you don’t need to read the first book to enjoy Forbidden, doing so will give you deeper insight into Jara’s family and relationships. I hadn’t read the first installment beforehand, but I immediately started it as soon as I finished this one.
In this book, Jara and her partner Travis join a team of detectives investigating a series of murders spanning multiple states. As they gather evidence, they uncover that the killings have been happening far longer than anyone suspected—and that there are more victims than originally believed.
This is an absolutely fantastic book. I can’t wait for the third installment. Lee Sato is definitely an author to watch.
